Canvas Login & Access Issues

Troubleshooting Canvas Authentication, Access & Visibility Issues

Last Updated: July 28th, 2026

Most problems fall into one of three areas: signing in (Authentication), your account being able to reach Canvas at all (Access), or seeing your courses once you're in (Visibility).

Authentication — Signing In

Enter your myLane Username (L-Number) and Password (the same password you use to register for classes), then select Log In.

  • Username: Your L-Number — an "L" followed by eight digits, such as L00123456. If the ATC created a manual account for you, use the username you were given instead. Your username is not case sensitive.
  • Password: Your myLane password. Passwords are case sensitive.

Forgot your password?
Use the Forgot password? link on the Canvas login screen and follow the on-screen tip for the remaining steps. This resets your myLane password.

Password not working?
Canvas hides your password as you type and has no "reveal" option, so an extra space or a mistyped character is easy to miss — one of the most common reasons a correct password is rejected. To rule it out, type your password somewhere you can see it first:

  1. Open a plain text editor (Notepad, TextEdit, or a notes app).
  2. Type your password there and read it back — watch for a stray space at the start or end, and for characters that look slightly off.
  3. Copy and paste it into the Canvas password field.

Access — Reaching Canvas

Just registered?
New accounts and enrollments take a short time to appear in Canvas. We're actively working to shorten this, but please allow up to an hour before reaching out — other enrollment steps such as financial aid, waitlists, pre-approvals, and manual release holds can add time. If you still can't get in after that, contact the student help desk for further assistance.

Account holds
A disabled account or an enrollment hold can block access. For registration and hold questions, contact Enrollment Services.

Canvas mobile app
The Canvas Student and Canvas Teacher apps sign in separately from your browser. In the app, search for Lane Community College, then use the same Username and myLane password. If the browser works but the app doesn't — or the reverse — that points to an app-specific issue rather than your account.

Browser tips
If a page won't load or you get stuck in a login loop: use a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari; clear your cache and cookies or open a private/incognito window; or try a different browser.

Check for an outage
Before filing a ticket, confirm Canvas is running at the Instructure status page.

Visibility — Finding Your Courses

Not seeing your course(s)?

  • Students: Your instructor may not be using Canvas, or may not have published the course yet. If a published course isn't showing as a card, go to Courses → All Courses and star it to pin it to your Dashboard. Newly enrolled courses may sit under Future Enrollments until the term begins.
  • Instructors: Your courses appear on your Dashboard and under Courses in the global navigation. Each course must be published before students can access it, and this is done per course at the start of each term. If a course isn't listed at all, you may not be assigned to it yet, or it may not have been created.

Past-term courses
After a term ends, its courses move to a read-only (concluded) state for both students and instructors. You can still view the content, but you can't submit, grade, or make changes. Concluded courses are listed under Courses → All Courses.
