Credit and Non-Credit Courses
All students for credit and non-credit courses are added to courses automatically from Banner. Teachers do not have the permissions to manually enroll students inside of courses for credit and continuing education courses that exist within Canvas.
High School Connection enrollments are generally managed by the high school connections team (hsc-office@lanecc.edu or fullerkj@lanecc.edu for technical issues related to High School Connections specifically).
If you are wanting to get help giving a student early access to a CRN, contact the ATC (atc@lanecc.edu) to verify where the automatic enrollment might be in the process and to get options for expediting enrollment.

Manual Enrollments in Canvas
Instructor created enrollments (i.e. add people to course) do not operate the same way Credit and Non-Credit enrollments (SIS enrollments) do. When instructors manually add users to a Canvas course, they are added as "pending" and require the user to accept the enrollment before they become active. An enrollment is accepted either via a link emailed or a banner presented at the top of Canvas when the user logs in. Until the user accepts, they will not receive posted announcements, cannot see any course content, and will not get reminders, since Canvas sends the invitation only once. A course with manual enrollments cannot be used to reach students who have not yet accepted their pending enrollment.
Instructors of development shells, programs, and groups have the ability to manually enroll most roles (students, teachers, etc.) in their course. Students who are taking a course for credit or will need to have record of their progress should not be placed in development shells under any circumstance. Manual enrolling users into a course using this method will place the enrollment into a “pending” status until the user accepts the invite.
Follow the steps below to add people to a Canvas Course:
- Access the course you wish to add someone to.
- Access People in the left-hand Course Navigation.
- Select + People button at the top right of the screen.
- Enter the user's school email address into the text box, ensuring the Email address is selected for the “Add Users by” options.
- Add more than one user at a time by adding a comma between emails. (Example: userone@lanecc.edu,usertwo@lanecc.edu)
- You can use L number to add someone to a course by setting "Add User by" to Login ID.
- Select the correct role you wish to give them.
- Student
- Teacher - full teacher access with editing permissions.
- Non-editing teacher - a user with teacher capabilities like grading without the ability to edit pages, assignments, etc.
- Designer - utilized by the ATC Instructional Designers
- ATC Support - utilized by the ATC to support instructors with technical issues and questions with their courses.
- Select Next.
- Verify the correct name(s) appear with the email or L number entered.
- Select Add Users.
What to Do When Hitting an Error
If you receive an error similar to “We were unable to find matches below” while adding a user to a course, it is likely the user does not exist. Double check that you entered the user's information correctly, and that you are using either a Lane email or a L number when Login ID is selected.
