Grader Report Excluded, Locked, and Hidden Grades

Adding and removing exclusion and locks from grades in the grader report for individual students.

Last Updated: January 5th, 2025

When working on the grader report in Moodle there are two different icons to watch out for when troubleshooting grades not calculating correctly. This includes Excluded grades and Locked grades.

Excluded grades are identified with a small grey circle with a dash inside.

Locked grades are identified with a grey lock icon.

Hidden grades are identified with a grey crossed-out eye icon.

Other symbols you may see are an asterisk for feedback and a box with a pencil for overridden grades. Check out this article on gradebook overrides to learn Removing a Gradebook Override for troubleshooting grades further.

All of these identifiers can be applied to individual student grades or across all students on entire activities.

Removing Exclusions, Locks, and Hidden

  1. At the top of your Moodle course access the gradebook by using the Grades tab to view the Grader Report.
  2. Turn Editing On at the top right of the page.
  3. Find the student and the grade entry with any of the icons for excluded, locked, or hidden that you wish to change.
  4. Select the three dots to the top right of the grade entry and select Edit Grade. (When changing the visibility state or locking you can change these directly from this menu.)

  5. Uncheck the box associated with the setting you want to remove.
  6. Save Changes at the bottom of the page.
Edit Grade page for a specific student and assignment. Excluded and hidden options under "Final grade" settings and locked under "Hidden until" settings.

Changes in Bulk by Grade Item

If multiple students on one grade item have excluded grades that you want to remove you can do this in bulk. This is done following the steps for removing overrides in single view, within the gradebook, but unchecking the boxes in the exclude column instead.
