Switching between Atto & TinyMCE text editor

How to Change Your Default HTML Editor

Last Updated: December 17th, 2024

The text editor (sometimes referred to as the 'HTML editor') helps users enter and format content. Many of its functions will be familiar to anyone who uses a word processing program.

Default Editor: The default text editor in classes.lanecc.edu is TinyMCE, a modern and robust editor supported in both mobile and desktop versions of Moodle.

Other Options:

  • Atto – A legacy editor still available for users requiring its features, though active development has ended (only security updates will continue until Moodle 4.5).
  • Plain Text Editor – Provides a raw text experience with no toolbars or formatting options.

You can switch between editors at any time. Note that changes apply site-wide to your personal preferences, not to individual courses.

How to Change Your Default HTML Editor

  1. In the User Menu (profile photo in top-right), click your name and select Preferences. Your Preferences page will open.
  2. UnderUser account, click Editor preferences. The Editor preferences page will open.
  3. From the Text editor drop-down menu:
    • To format text with a toolbar, choose TinyMCE HTML Editor (default, and recommended).
    • To use the older editor from previous Moodle versions, choose ATTO HTML Editor or choose “text” for text only.
  4. Click Save changes (at bottom of page).

Development of Atto has officially ended.

Moodle will remove it as a core editor in a future release after Moodle 4.5. Only critical security updates will be made until then.
