Instructions on chatrooms in Moodle

Chat Differs from Messaging and Forums

It's easy to confuse Moodle's chat with other communication tools like messaging and forums, but they serve different purposes. Chat is for live, real-time conversations, similar to instant messaging, where everyone can interact simultaneously. You’ll know it’s a chat because it happens in a designated chat room, and you can see who else is online and participating at the same time.

In contrast, Moodle messaging is more like email, where you send private messages to specific individuals, and forums are for threaded discussions that take place over time, allowing participants to post and respond at their own pace. The chat feature is distinct because it offers a synchronous, immediate way to communicate, making it ideal for quick discussions or real-time collaboration.

Using the Chat Feature

If your instructor has set up a chat room in your course, you can access it at any time, even outside of scheduled sessions. However, your instructor may designate specific times for chats, like virtual office hours or group discussions. Scheduled chat sessions will appear in your Moodle calendar, so you can easily keep track of when to log in for live interactions.

Participate in a Moodle Chat

  • Access the Chat Room: Navigate to the chat activity in your course and click on the chat link.
  • Enter the Chat: Click the "Enter chat now" button to join the live discussion.
  • Type Your Message: Use the text box at the bottom to type your message, then press Enter to send it.
  • Engage in Real-Time: Read and respond to messages as they appear, and see who else is online in the participant list.
  • Exit the Chat: Simply close the chat window when you’re done participating.
