2026-2027 Canvas Start of Term Checklist

A quick checklist reference to get your term started smoothly in Canvas

Understanding Your K16 Migration Logs

The K16 migration process generates a detailed log for activities and resources imported from Moodle to Canvas. These logs are your first diagnostic tool - they tell you what needs your attention.

⚠️Request metacourses BEFORE the start of the term⚠️

Important: Combining sections into a metacourse (Canvas cross-listing) merges your individual child sections into one parent course. Do not publish child courses prior to cross-listing, or student submissions and grades may be lost.
Request a metacourse here.

Step 1: Review K16 Migration Logs

  1. In your Canvas course, navigate to “Pages” in the navigation bar, and your logs should be listed at the top with a naming convention e.g. “000-Migration Exception Log).”
  2. In red text, you will see “Item(s) Requiring Action."

  1. Here is a breakdown of the descriptors. The primary field to check is Description, since this will provide details such as H5P activities that need to be placed, whether something is not supported in Canvas, draft forum announcements, etc. This will provide steps to take to recreate what was originally in your Moodle course.
Here is a breakdown of the different fields:
    • Reference ID - Unique tracking number assigned to the warning.
    • Action - Typically displays "Warning" to flag items needing manual review.
    • Interaction - Designates whether the issue occurred during "Import" or "Export".
    • System - Identifies the origin/destination system ("Moodle" or "Canvas").
    • Description - Explains the issue (e.g., gated module items, unresolved links, or draft forum announcements) and provides steps to recreate the Moodle functionality.
    • Source - Provides a direct link pointing to the item in Moodle or Canvas.
  1. Review and clean up your Canvas course (additional instructions in this article). All Moodle content should be carried over, but if Moodle access is required, please submit a Moodle extended access request, which allows limited access until Dec 31st, 2026.

Step 2: Home Page, Syllabus, and Grade Weighting

  • By default, your home page should display Modules, which are collapsible sections with activities, resources, and pages.
If you would like to change your home page, follow these instructions.
  • Canvas provides a dedicated “Syllabus” link in the navigation menu. Ensure the syllabus is available and accurate.
  • In Canvas, your gradebook structure is determined entirely by your Assignments page. To weight your grades, go to Assignments in the left navigation, click the three-dot (⋮) menu at the top right, and check the box for Weight Grades by Assignment Groups. From there, you can assign percentages to your different assignment groups (e.g., Homework: 40%, Quizzes: 20%, Exams: 40%).

Step 3: Audit Content and Integrations

Check each module to ensure all content is appearing correctly. You can change to student view to ensure everything appears accurate for students. You will see a pink banner at the bottom of the page, which includes a button to leave student view.

Assignments: Assignment activities should be displayed in the modules area in the appropriate section or week. You can also find a list of assignments (which include quizzes) in the assignments area of the navigation menu.

Forums: Discussion forums will be posted by the user “lane migration” for any initial instructor prompts or posts. You can replace these posts by copying and pasting into a new post and deleting the placeholder one from “lane migration”.

Quizzes: Check quiz question types and import questions via item banks (not course settings). Here are instructions on item banks (question banks) in Canvas.

Link Validator: This tool allows you to check for any broken links in the course. Here are instructions on how to use the link validator.

If applicable:

  • Check your Kaltura videos. You should see “My Media (Kaltura)” in the navigation menu. You can add Kaltura videos via the Kaltura button in the text editor (rainbow star icon).

  • If using H5P activities, you will need to embed them again into your modules. You can use the “H5P” button in the text editor. H5P activities can also be accessed in the course settings, in the H5P content bank.

Step 4: Dates & Visibility

Dates: Shift all assignment, quiz, and module due dates for the current term. Canvas offers the ability to bulk change due dates and availability dates.

Publishing modules and items: For any item inside a module to be visible, you must publish the module itself. A common mistake is publishing all items inside the module, without publishing the module itself. You can use the student view to ensure all the content you want is available to students.

Step 5: Final Quality Check

  • Metacourses: Request metacourses before the term starts and do not publish child courses to prevent student work and grades from being lost.
  • K16 Migration Logs: Check 000-Migration Exception Log under Pages, review all red "Item(s) Requiring Action" warnings, and follow the descriptions to fix or recreate content and/or unsupported Moodle items.
  • Moodle Resource Replacement: Remove leftover Moodle files/links and replace them with native Canvas resources.
  • Home Page Setup: Verify your home page is set to Modules (or reconfigure it using the home page setup guide).
  • Integrations & Media: Test or configure all Kaltura videos, H5P elements, and external LTI tool connections.
  • Quizzes & Item Banks: If needed, import quiz questions via Item Banks (rather than course settings) and verify all quiz question types.
  • Discussion Forums: Review discussion boards and reassign/update posts imported under the "lane migration" user profile.
  • Due Dates: Shift all due dates across assignments, quizzes, and modules to match the current term schedule.
  • Publishing Content: Ensure all intended modules, pages, and weekly items are set to "Published."
  • Student View Audit: Walk through the entire course using Student View to double-check formatting, links, and quiz behavior.

When all steps are complete, you can publish your course to students.
