Canceled and Reassigned Course(s)

What do I do with a canceled course?

Canceled Courses

How does a canceled class change the Canvas course?

If a section is canceled, the Canvas course is set to "Concluded" within Canvas automatically.

This means students can only view content in the course, and instructors are not able to edit the course beyond the date the conclusion takes place. There is no reason to worry about "deleting" a canceled course.

What can I do with a canceled course?

No action is required on the part of a teacher when a course or section is canceled. Instructors can still import content from concluded Canvas courses.

Reassigned Courses

How does a reassigned class change the Canvas course?

Students remain in the same shell when the course CRN is reassigned. The original instructor is automatically unenrolled once the assigned instructor in Banner is changed, and the new instructor is enrolled in the existing shell in Canvas automatically.

Delete

Warning

If there is content within the course shell before the instructor change, that same content will remain in the shell. If the original instructor wishes to not share their content, they should ensure they request ATC to reset the course (deletes all course content) before the official reassignment.

What can I do with a reassigned course?

If you know a course that you are currently the instructor in will be reassigned, and you have imported and prepared content in the CRN already, you can request a dev shell to move your content into. At the same time, you can request the course be reset if you do not plan to share content with the new instructor. This is upon request only, as the ATC is not made aware when a course is reassigned and whether content should be moved out.

If you do not wish to keep a copy of that shell on Canvas, you can take a backup of the course and store the backup of the course on your computer (see the link below).

What if a course was reassigned to me?

If you have received a course, you should do the following:

  1. Ideally, confirm you are permitted to utilize any content that was left in the shell.
  2. Contact the ATC to request that the course full name and course short name be updated to your last name.
  3. Import any content you wish to add and prepare the course like normal.
