Canvas Metacourses

Combine two or more of the same class to save you time!

Last Updated: September 3rd, 2026

What is a Metacourse?

A metacourse is a parent course that combines two or more sections in Canvas. If you are teaching more than one section of the same course, this allows you to deliver one copy of the course content to all the sections. The child sections handle enrollment, while the parent metacourse handles the content. The parent is the lowest CRN number listed

Warning

The ATC cannot combine sections after students have submitted work without data loss. Ensure you submit the metacourse a few business days in advance of the term start and keep the highest CRN empty or hidden to prevent student submissions being made to the child courses.
